Arthritis In PetsExercise is fundamental in keeping your pet, young or old, in excellent health. Arthritis and skeletal diseases have become more common in modern canine population. Fortunately a holistic approach consisting of moderate exercise, weight control, adequate diet and nutraceuticals can bring on positive benefits and many years of quality life to affected dogs. When joints are not exercised, they can stiffen, diminishing mobility even more. Lack of exercise can also lead to weight gain, loss of muscle tone, strength and flexibility and eventually atrophy. Studies have shown that exercise is as important as drug therapy or surgery, without negative side effects or complications. Ideally, an exercise program should include each of the basic types of exercise: AEROBIC, STRETCHING AND STRENGTH TRAINING. Aerobic exercise raises heart rate, increases blood flow and maintains cardiovascular health. Stretching helps increase flexibility and strength training builds muscles, ligaments and tendons. All of the above are accomplished through SWIMMING. It provides aerobic benefits, builds muscles and allows joints to be rotated and stretched under non-weight bearing conditions. Swimming is the ideal exercise for dogs of all ages because of its low impact quality. There is no pounding of the body and all muscles work in a single motion. The resistance of water helps support the body and protects against sudden movements that can strain a muscle or stress a joint. Swimming relaxes muscles, improves coordination, keeps joints lubricated, and tendons flexible. It is the ideal exercise for post surgery rehabilitation, hip and elbow displasia, arthritis and safe and effective weight loss. Article Contributed by Trained Dog Happy Dog, 352-528-3828. |
