National Service Dog Eye Exam Day in May
During the week of May 12, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists¨ (ACVO¨), in partnership with Pet Health Systems, a nationwide veterinary communications system, will offer complimentary eye screenings and health assessments to all certified assistance dogs whose owners register online at www.ACVOeyeexam.org by May 8, 2008.
This landmark event is being sponsored by Merial, maker of HEARTGARD¨ Plus and FRONTLINE¨.
The free eye and wellness screenings are available to all active "working dogs," including guide dogs, handicapped-assistance dogs, detection dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs that have been certified by or are currently enrolled in a formal training program. The ACVO estimates that 5,000 to 10,000 service dogs nationwide will be evaluated during the event that has been developed to improve service dog health and avert diseases that could potentially prevent these dogs from performing their invaluable duties.
Sarasota's only board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. M-A Salisbury of Animal Eye Care, Inc., has volunteered to participate in the event. Practicing in Sarasota since 1992, Dr. Salisbury is an ACVO Diplomate who received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tufts University, School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts. Her comprehensive medical training includes a 13-month internship in Small Animal Medicine & Surgery and a three-year Ophthalmology residency at the University of Georgia, School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Salisbury is one of approximately 140 Diplomates of the ACVO, an approved veterinary specialty organization of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, who has volunteered to donate professional services during National Service Dog Eye Exam Day.
ACVO's mission is "to advance the quality of veterinary medicine through certification of veterinarians who demonstrate excellence as specialists in veterinary ophthalmology." To become board certified, a candidate must not only complete their DVM program, a one-year internship, and a three-year residency, but also pass a rigorous series of credentials and examinations. Ê
In addition to the eye health screening, service dogs also will be eligible to receive a free lifestyle assessment, a biochemical profile and complete blood count by their primary care veterinarians through Pet Health Systems' Pet Wellness ReportTM.
According to the ACVO, these critical medical services are being offered free of charge as an expression of gratitude for the life-saving and life-sustaining work provided by these special animals. Through this innovative program, both ACVO and Pet Health Systems are donating services valued at more than $900,000.
Online pre-registration at www.ACVOeyeexam.org by May 8 is mandatory to participate in the event.
Once the simple, step-by-step online registration is completed, service dog owners are instructed to call a participating veterinary ophthalmologist in their community and identify themselves as a participant in the ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam Day. Appointments for the eye screenings will be scheduled, and dogs will be examined during the week of May 12. Following the eye exams, service dog owners are then asked to contact their primary care veterinarians to make appointments to obtain the complimentary Pet Wellness Report¨. While recommended, the follow-up visit with the primary care veterinarian is not required to receive the free eye screening.
From her suite of offices, which is conveniently located at 3807 Bond Place, 1 ? miles west of Interstate 75 off Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota, Dr. Salisbury is now scheduling appointments for service dogs that have pre-registered for the event.
For additional information about National Service Dog Eye Exam Day or to schedule an appointment, please call Dr. Salisbury's office at 941-379-3937.

Pet Palooza In May!
WANTED: Pet Lovers Seeking Pets and Pet-Friendly Places to Live.
Camden Apartment Communities and the Humane Society Tampa Bay present "Pet Palooza", an event aiming to link pets-in-need with pet lovers and pet-friendly apartments.
Nearly thirty-thousand homeless pets are euthanized each year in Hillsborough County alone.Ê There are simply more pets in need than homes offering to take them in. Knowing this, Camden Apartment Communities wants to show their support for these ÒunderdogsÓ by hosting ÔPet PaloozaÕ and by partnering with The Humane Society Tampa Bay to do it.
The events will feature adoptable pets from The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, micro-chipping coupons for animals adopted during the events, food, drinks, prizes, dog training tips and much more. Admission to the events is FREE to the public and their leashed, friendly pets.
ÒThis is our forth year for Pet Palooza! Not only is it a great way to make the Tampa Bay community aware that all of our apartment home communities are pet friendly and have zero pet weight restrictions, but that we also give back to The Humane Society Tampa Bay,Ó says Brooke Middleton, Regional Marketing Director for Camden Apartment Communities. ÒFor many people these days, their pets are their family. Camden appreciates the strength of the human-animal bond and is proud to be able to provide a home for everyone.Ó
In an effort to help find loving homes for pets, anyone who signs a new pet lease at any Camden community in May will receive no pet deposit and half off their pet fee!Ê Plus, for every new pet lease signed, Camden will donate $50 to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay!
ÒPeople surrender their pets at shelters because their landlords will not allow pets.Ó
Pet owners living in or looking for an apartment will likely confirm it can be difficult to find a suitable pet-friendly place to live. ÒIt is very common to see people surrender their pets at shelters because their landlords will not allow pets,Ó says Cathy Bellatin, Special Events Director of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. ÒWe wish there were more pet-friendly communities like Camden and we think this event is a great opportunity for pets and pet lovers alike.Ó
ÒWe are aware it is especially difficult to find an apartment community that will accept large dogs.Ó said Middleton. ÒWeÕre proud to say all of our Camden apartment communities accept pets of all weights. In doing this, we believe weÕre helping make a difference in saving the lives of countless dogs and cats by opening the doors of our pet-friendly communities all over the Bay Area.Ó
All twelve Camden Apartment Communities in Tampa Bay are proud to be pet friendly. Camden is one of the largest multifamily real estate trusts (REITS) in the nation with approximately 180 rental communities from Washington D.C. to Southern California.Ê For more information.
